Communicating research

Communication skills are crucial for students to effectively promote the results of their work. We have outlined five events that occur during supervision:

  1. Presenting at seminars and conferences: this page outlines powerpoint presentations and useful preparation techniques.

  2. Publishing in journals: we discuss its importance, how to prepare for publishing and read for content.

  3. The dissertation: we consider what experienced examiners look for, namely coherence and value.

  4. Publishing on the internet: looks at the forms and uses of various media, such as blogs, online journals, wikis, skype, etc.

  5. From dissertation to book: we investigate the feasibility of this transition.

We also discuss how you can assist your student's success in preparing for these communication events:

  • Audience: we discuss the importance of identifying and shaping communication to a particular audience.
