How to use this site

Who is it for

This site is designed for new and intending supervisors, members of supervisory panels, experienced supervisors, mentors of new supervisors and Directors of Graduate Studies. Our aim is to provide you with a wide range of resources, references and examples of practices from the ANU and elsewhere, and direct links to relevant policies and procedures.

Topics

The site is grouped into a series of topics, presented graphically on the homepage.

  • Being a supervisor
  • HDR Candidates
  • Stages of candidature
  • Examination
  • What's happening globally
  • Research environment

Structure

Each page is structured into three sections:

  • Overview and research - this is brief and has been deliberately written in a ‘chatty’ style, but is firmly based on research and literature in the area.
  • Ideas and tools - gathered from supervisors, literature and students. We also encourage further ideas and tools, using Your comments.
  • ANU information - an ANU perspective on research supervision, including ANU policies, practices and statistics. With increasing College responsibility for Higher Degree by Research matters at the ANU this part of the site will grow as Colleges develop their own resources.
